Private Medical Colleges…..

Many banners were seen around our Universities displaying slogans to ban the Private Medical College at Malabe.

I think the Students who protest against this are irrational. can’t they understand that it’s the middle class students who couldn’t gain entry to Medical Faculty, maybe by a very small margin are the ones who are going to be benefited by these Colleges. The rich can go abroad and get whatever degree they want. But I’m sure there will be some standards set in this Private College so the knowledge of the doctors who pass out from it will be equal to any other doctor in the island.

Mostly everyone should understand, this is good for the country. People are blaming that its a sale of the Education, but in my opinion, whoever pays for the education they get, they value it.  The people who stand for the Free Education system may now be against of the private universities, because they are students. Its the country’s money that they have spent to come to the place where they are today. They will pass out as doctors, work for some years, make money for themselves and gain experience and then would go abroad in the pretext of gaining more knowledge, but would never return to the country.

So are they really patriotic. I think they are selfish. They use the public funds to gain knowledge and sell it to some other country by working for them.

Or else where are all the doctors who pass out from our Universities. About 1000 students from the island enter the Medical Faculties annually. But the health sector is lacking qualified specialist doctors & surgeons. (For some illnesses only one or two specialists / surgeons are available for the whole country..!!!!)

So please don’t be against of Private Universities. If some one is so critical about banning private institutions , my suggestion is “Ok . Then bring a law for the Doctors who studied at Sri Lankan universities banning them from going abroad.”

-Please post your ideas as well…

i too agree for some extent what u say…
but have u seen the results the foreign doctors get in entry exam held by SLMC… not even 35 are passing out of 500… why??? what is the standard of them… do they have enough clinical experience.. i’d met a medical student from Russia (fourth year) who didn’t know how to nebulize with salbutamol. do u think if we allow PMC to establish here, the quality of the doctors will remain the same??? bec sri lanka has limited amount of facilities to treat.. so the clinical skill of the doctors is our only source to treat patient.

u’ve talk about foreign exchange..ya thats true. 6.2 billion is spent annually… but this is much less amount compare to other expenses. there is no need to give up our quality to save that 6.2 billion.

when a student pay rs.500000..he ll definitely thinks to get that money back as he start practicing.

as a state student, there is no need afraid about the job. anyhow we re going to practice is gov.hospital. there ll be enough pvt hospital to pvt medical students to practice.

be gentle to think about the the free education…the value of A/L. ultimately the free education will slum off as Indian free education system…

Well, as long as anything happens to the well being of our country ; its OK. I meant that Our doctors should give their service to our country. They should not go abroad after studying, never to return back.

And all I wanted to say was that Private Medical Colleges are OK; If they are conducted with correct standards. and its not something that others should make such a fuss.

Yeah, Shiyanth, I do agree about what you say about the knowledge of Russian MDs. ( But can we stop them.!!! – that’s the main reason that I think that going against Private Medical Colleges in Sri Lanka is like blocking a drain of water while a river flows in without any interruption. So the best thing is to get the best from it.) I know people who’d got 3F’s in A/L, and still go on to be Doctors. So you can imagine how they would go on practicing.

My view of Private Medical Colleges is that they should be conducted in a way that the doctors who pass out from them have a good knowledge to serve our country.

    Hi,

This is a really interesting topic people. Basically speaking, i really like the idea of opening private universities, but they should confirm to the following two basic guidelines.
    1.Quality of Education
    2.Affordability

The reason i’m saying these are that i was once a student at the Faculty of Science, University of Peradeniya. My main intention was to study about computers but i was unable to enter to Moratuwa IT Faculty or the UCSC b’cos my Z-Score wasn’t enough. I studied there for about 1.5 semesters and left the uni b’cos what i was looking for wasn’t there.

Prior to going to uni, I’ve done a CCNA and Windows Networking course and i attended another Diploma course while i was at the uni. There was huge gap of professionalism between these institutes and the uni. The education given to us regarding the computer sciences were not adequate nor uptodate.

Currently i’m following the BCS Program at ESoft and when i compare the amount of education i get from them is much much more professional, industry oriented and updated concepts.

The reason i mention this is that if there were private universities then there’d be a big competition between them to prove who has the best minds and the best education system. This improves the overall quality of the education received by the students.

For some university students, this would become a major headache as not everything is by the book and braindumps wouldn’t give them good grades. This would improve the practicality of students and more open to the industry.

this is my opinion…it is pointless that opposing for private medical colleges in srilanka…why don’t you people understand that just because of 1 z score a student is missing the chance to enter a university in srilanka..do you think that its fare??the person put his soul into death in his 2 and half years of a/ls and just because of that 1% z score he couldnt do medicine and spend his rest of the life in some other jobs..my point is that if a private medical college is started here that person could do medicine and ful fill his dream.and those who are opposing the PMC should think that it is their own country mates who go abroad and suffer so much just to approach the goal medicine..why cant u people just help them to study in their own country with their family and friends..so I stongly prefer a private medical college to be opened soon in srilanka.

  • Katezz says:

oh well..Are any of you sure that this medical college would really happen? I mean, damn! have they like given out application forms for admission, at that medical college they say they’re gona open this may , the Saint Theresa’s thingy?

  • Mahesh says:

Most of the people who tell PMC is a must tell that we are jellous of someone to become a doctor. First think abt Rajarata Medical Faculty. It was opened with the initiation taken by the present government. But now the faculty is severly threatened by the deficiency in physical and human resources. They haven’t any plan to upgrade the faculty. All funds are cut off & has no money to buy equipments to para-clinical departments. There is no land is reserved for the construction of profesorial unit. No programme to attract staff to the faculty. Who are the people selected in to the state medical faculties? are they disqualified people as who r willing to enter PMCs ,with out even gaining 3 simple passes. No all of them are talented students who posseses high results. Government has the responsibility to provide students a standered education than opening of pmcs. Opening of a private medical faculty is not benifited by all the students who were not gained the entrance to state medical faculties. No. the people, benifited by this is who can spend 60 lacks. most of the poeple can’t do that. That means starting a pmc is letting the disqualified people to gain a medical degree. This is trowing away the rights of qualified people to become doctors.
    think who r right?

My friend those who can spend this type of money will go to Australia or some other foriegn country where communist idealists (idiots) don’t dictate who should get an education and will get the same degree. And you know what, we are spending precious income to pay those universities. And the Student will be a doctor and work there and do you think Australia or the USA lets bad doctors practice. No they dont. So these students have to gain knowledge and will do the exams and will be doctors there. And finally, we loose our money and the doctor to a foriegn country.

And ur talking about Rajarate medical faculty not having resources. That’s a sad part and we’ll see more degration due to the current presidents bad economical policies and corruption. But private universities will not funded by the government. its private for godsakes.

If there is proper overseeing by the education ministry or National university staff at these private universites, and the degrees will be given by recognized places what is wrong??

So don’t be foolish. Private institutes will allow those kids who have the brains + money + and the love of Sri Lanka to stay here and serve this country. not some foriegn nation.

  • Esha says:

Being a medical student in sri lanka i think I should leave a comment in this section. Medical field is far different from other areas. Many consider an MBBS or an MD will automatically allow practice of medicine but that’s not so.Anyone should obtain the Licence to practice medicine. If you review the recent history of medical education in Sri lanka I think it has gone down from the level it was in the post independant period. Sri Lankan medical degree was accepted in UK until 70s but it’s not so anymore. Actually medical degrees are recognized based on the university it’s awarded. SLMC also has a list of medical colleges it accepts. So they are the ones to be blamed if they include low quality educational institutes in that list. US, UK, Singapore and even WHO have their own lists of recognized medical colleges. Here is a link to Singapore medical council web site. http://www.smc.gov.sg/html/1153709442948.html .So I think it’s upto the medical licensing authority to judge who’s getting the license or not. If you’ve seen an ACT16 results sheet you’d be surprised to see almost 99% of the candidates getting repeated. So what I feel is, if we as medical students continue to protest PMC’s we’ll be hated by most of the people in the country for selfishness. So we should stop that. We should be more concerned of our studies to be at a higher place. When it comes to treatment the patient will choose the best doctor. Our country has a doctor patient ratio of 1:70. Although that’s better than many developing countries we’re far behind developed countries where it’s 1:2-5. I say let the private medical faculties to come up. We should equip ourselves with knowledge to fight them not with banners.
And all those people who blame doctors leaving the country please know your facts. Sri Lanka has a very low rate of migrating doctors. Many doctors who migrated cannot come back because our country doesn’t recognize any foreign training programmes in the post graduate field. So don’t fall in to health ministers hands.

  • PRASAD says:

I belive every one has the right to say there own view.I am sure most of you will agree that Sri Lanka has excellent Doctors. Most of them have gained there MBBS in Sri Lanka. Don’t forget I was with my wife in Sri Lanka when our baby son was born. There was no difference between the Doctors I see and the Doctors I seen in Australia. They are all well qualified doctors. Hats off to to the Sri Lankan Doctors.
Most of the Doctors were qualified overseas in there post graduate studies overseas. But they never decided to practice overseas.
I live in Australia and my best friend passed out from then RAGAMA PRIVATE MEDICAL COLLEGE, but now practice in Australia as a specialist Doctor. He missed out Sri Lanka state Medical college by few marks. Immagin he gave up hopes about becoming a Doctor at that stage. Thank God he choosed the only other way the private medical College.

Today he is saving lives of thousands Australians . This is great.I am sure all Doctors who passed out from Ragama private Medical College must be really proud now, taking that option.
So don’t blame Private Medical Colleges. See that they have the same standerds as CMC.Australia needs Russian qualified Doctors as well since there are lots of Russian live here too.Remember no one can practice as a Doctor without getting the Medical Licence. So why worry???

  • Dr.B.Nadaraja says:

I am an old man over 80. I have lived through Nehrus socialism in India and Bandaranaike’s in Ceylon not to mention the despots,Pol Pot, Stalin, Mao etd. I have no doubt that socialism is the greatest evil known to mankind.
In Nehru’s India brilliant scientists committed suicide. They could not get a passport to get out of the country or get a job in India for their living. When the Nobel laureate Gobind Khorana was asked “Arent you proud to be an Indian?”.He was incensed. “I am an American and proud to be an American” he quipped. Only he knew the number of officials he had to bribe and the difficulties he faced to get a passport and get out of that wretched country at that time.
I remember two lecturers who in 1960, got Professorships in Malaysia and Singapore and srreptitiously escaped from this country after cheating the immigration. Their colleagues at the Ceylon Medical College went mad with jealousy and would have murdered them if only they had the chance. Is there a limit to human jealousy? The green eyed monster stalks our beloved land as anywhere in this world. In that Socialist Celon noone had the right to get a passpert or get a jo job on another country.
In the Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka we have the private hospitals, NavaLanka, Asiri ,Apollo etc where our rich Socialists get treatment. Let me stop my blabbering here.
Our children have a right to education, a right to do medicine if they have got the ability and someone can provide them with the facilities to do it. To deny this is pure evil.

  • ashley says:

Im a student of St Theresa’s Medical college. I was really happy to go there because i missed the chance of been selected because i got only 3 C passes for my A/L. Although I wanted to do the 3rd shy my parents didnt want me to do so. Instead, they sent me here. Truely this is a vert good opportunity for people like us to be doctors. But there is 1 thing I must say. My sister is a final year student in the colombo medical faculty. She has a very good knowledge. But, I am afraid to tell that i dont have the knowledge she had when she was in her 2nd year. In this place, these lecturers try to mislead us telling that we are having a good knowkedge. But I understand the truth because my sis is in a government university. We do not have an access to go to government hospitals and study the cases we must see. But in the pvt hospitals we go for clinical,do not have patients with every disease. Thus, although we have a good theory knowledge (sometimes more than government students) we do not have that practical knowledge. It is a big loss for us. We still do not have a clear idea, how to manage a patient in primary care because almost all the patients are being seen by us are patients who had been managed before seen by us. however im not at all agree with the statement tell by the government students who tell that we will not care about the patients, but about money because we pay a lot of money for our degree.
